What should you check in a YouTube thumbnail?

Thumbnail dimensions and aspect ratio affect how an image fits the player and search surfaces. A 16:9 image is a common target for standard YouTube videos; 1280 × 720 pixels is a widely used working canvas. Platform recommendations can change, so check current YouTube Help guidance when preparing a final upload.

How this checker works

When you select an image, your browser reads its intrinsic pixel dimensions and calculates the simplified ratio. The preview fits the full image inside a 16:9 frame so you can see whether it leaves empty space or has a different shape. It does not crop the source or send it to a server.

Design for small screens

  • Use a clear subject and strong contrast.
  • Keep text short and large enough to read at small sizes.
  • Check that faces, logos, and key details are not placed right at the edges.
  • Export a sharp image without unnecessarily large file size.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool upload my thumbnail?

No. The browser reads the selected file locally. Cliperfly does not receive the image through this tool.

Does it crop the image to 16:9?

No. It shows the complete image fitted into a 16:9 preview frame. Use the image aspect ratio checker if you want to preview and download a cropped copy.

What if my image is not 16:9?

You can crop or reframe it, or create a new canvas and position the image inside it. Avoid stretching the image because that distorts subjects.
