Image aspect ratio checker

Find an image’s pixel dimensions and simplified aspect ratio, then preview a center crop to a common shape. Your image is processed in this browser and is not uploaded to Cliperfly.

The ratio checker reads local image dimensions. Downloading a crop renders a new PNG in your browser; the original file is not changed. The crop is centered automatically and does not include manual repositioning.

How to check an image’s aspect ratio

Choose an image from your device, and the checker reads its natural pixel width and height in your browser. It simplifies those dimensions to an aspect ratio such as 3:2, 4:5, or 16:9. The selected image is not sent to a server.

  1. Choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or another image format your browser supports.
  2. Review the original dimensions and simplified ratio.
  3. Select a target ratio to see how a centered crop would look.
  4. Enter the output width. The height is calculated to match the selected ratio.
  5. Download a PNG crop if the preview keeps the important parts of your image.

Common image aspect ratios

RatioExample dimensionsTypical use
1:11080 × 1080Square image or profile artwork
4:51080 × 1350Portrait social feed image
3:21200 × 800Landscape photo
4:31200 × 900Classic photo or presentation visual
16:91920 × 1080Widescreen thumbnail or video still
9:161080 × 1920Vertical story or short-form canvas

These are common dimensions, not universal requirements. The right ratio depends on where an image will appear, the subject’s placement, and whether the destination crops the image automatically.

Aspect ratio vs. image dimensions

Dimensions tell you the exact pixel size. Aspect ratio tells you the shape. A 600 × 800 image and a 1200 × 1600 image are both 3:4; the second has four times as many pixels. Keeping the ratio when resizing avoids accidental stretching, but it does not add detail that was absent from the original image.

What does cropping do?

A crop removes part of an image to match a target shape. This checker previews a centered crop so you can see the area that will remain. If the subject is off-center, use an image editor with a crop-position control instead. Resizing, stretching, and cropping are different operations: resizing changes pixel dimensions, stretching distorts proportions, and cropping cuts away edges.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check an image ratio without uploading it to a website?

Yes. Cliperfly reads the selected image in your browser and does not upload it to a Cliperfly server. The browser must still be able to decode the image format.

Does changing the aspect ratio reduce image quality?

The ratio itself does not determine quality. Cropping discards pixels outside the crop, while resizing may resample pixels. Exporting the crop as PNG avoids adding JPEG compression during the download, but it cannot restore detail missing from the source.

Why is my image stretched on another site?

The destination may be forcing a fixed width and height without preserving the image’s ratio. Use proportional resizing or crop to the required shape instead of stretching.

Can I crop an image to 9:16 for a vertical video?

Yes. Choose 9:16 to preview a centered vertical crop, then download the PNG. For video itself, use the video aspect ratio calculator to calculate frame dimensions.
